Character Journal Entry
After reading through Devon Hope's chapter (monologue, poem, and peer response), we'll be writing our own journal entry as a character from the novel. Write a journal entry responding to Tyrone's reaction to your character's poem. You can choose from any of the students we've read thus far (Chankara, Raul, Diondra, or Devon).
As one of these characters, write a reaction to Tyrone's response to your poem. Consider the following questions:
- How would s/he react to his feelings about him/her?
- How might the character answer the questions that Tyrone poses?
- Would the character react positively or negatively to what Tyrone says? Use strong word choice to portray the correct connotation for your character's reaction. Do they feel elated, understood, giddy? Devastated, gloomy, aggravated?
Make sure you use both your character's monologue and poem as sources of evidence to how they feel and what they'd say to Tyrone.
Example of a Character Journal:

Damn Tyrone, you still don't get it do you? I don't wanna be cruising crosscourt with Scotty Pippin. I don't get it man, you're the one that started this whole damn Open Mike Friday thing we got goin here. So when I confide in you my real identity, you dis me cause you wanna be the only "word-man" in the class? Just cause you're the one who takes up the spotlight, performing every Friday doesn't mean you the baddest word-man around. Like I said, just call me Surprise because that's what I'm going to do. Surprise you all.
