After Reading Activity #2

RAFT Writing Letter

Pretend that the school administration has threatened to pull the plug on Open Mike Fridays, believing it is not contributing to the new focus on standards of learning and is a waste of time. Your job is to either defend the practice of Open Mike Fridays or voice your agreement with the school's choice.

Role: student in Mr. Ward's class (who thoroughly enjoys Open Mike Fridays)
Audience: school administration (think Principal, Dean of Students, Board of Education)
Form: persuasive letter
Topic: Open Mike Friday's in Mr. Ward's class

If you are pro-Open Mike Fridays and want to defend them from being pulled, consider the following questions for your letter:

  • How would you defend the practice?
  • What have the students learned through Open Mike Fridays?
  • How has it changed them as people, students, learners?
  • What positive influences does Open Mike Friday have in their life?
If you are against Open Mike Friday's and want to let the school board know you agree with their decision consider the following:
  • Why is it a waste of the students' time?
  • Does it detract from their other studies?
  • Does Open Mike Fridays prepare them for real life?
  • Why is it more important to focus on standards of learning?
Use evidence from the text, either paraphrased or directly quoted, to defend your position. Make sure you address your audience, state your opinions and evidence clearly, and sign your name at the bottom.
